A candidate to become the next Prime Minister of Canada says, if chosen to lead that country, she would seek shelter under the British and French nuclear umbrellas as a deterrence against the United States whom she considers a threat to Canadian sovereignty.
Chrystia Freeland, a former Foreign Affairs minister in the Trudeau government says she knows how to forge alliances with countries and can use that experience to deter American designs on making Canada the 51st state. Polls suggest she's running second in the Liberal Party leadership race to former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney. The winner of the Liberal Leadership race will take over as Prime Minister from outgoing Justin Trudeau.
In the English language debate this week, Freeland whipped up anti-Trump rhetoric portraying the U.S. president as a predator who is threat to Canada's independence.
"What Canada needs to do is work with our democratic allies. I've been foreign minister. I know how to do that."
Freeland says she would start by reaching out to Denmark which is nervously trying to resist Trump's overtures to Greenland, and then gain the support of the other European Nato partners.
"I would be sure that Britain and France are there who possess nuclear weapons. I would be working urgently with those partners to build a closer security relationship that guarantees our security at a time when the United States can be a threat."

After his meeting with Trump at the White House, UK Prime Minister Keirs Starmer was asked about the controversy and dismissed any talk about Canada's annexation and departure from the British Commonwealth.
"You mentioned Canada, I think you're trying to find a divide between us (UK and USA) that doesn't exist. We're the closest of nations and we had very good discussions today," Starmer said during the joint press briefing with Trump.

"Freeland, whose Ukrainian grandfather was editor of a Nazi-controlled newspaper during World War II, called on #Canada to turn to nuclear powers France & UK - "for deterrence against a “predatory” U.S." #Ukraine's Nazi chickens are coming home to roost."
Freeland was finance minister when she, along with PM Trudeau, stood and applauded in the House of Commons on September 22, 2023, where Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian-Canadian and former member of the 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division (a Nazi unit), was honored with two standing ovations.
That took place during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Hunka was introduced by then-House Speaker Anthony Rota as a “Ukrainian hero” and “Canadian hero” who fought against the Russians during World War II. Freeland later said she had no idea Hunka served in a Nazi unit.
Freeland claimed, “none of us understood” what was happening and that “obviously none of us recognized”
Vladimir Putin referenced the Hunka affair during his speech at the Valdai Discussion Club on October 5, 2023, in Sochi, Russia. Putin said the incident supported his narrative of needing to “de-Nazifying” Ukraine, a central justification for Russia’s invasion.
“The whole world saw how the Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation to a Nazi, an SS member. It’s disgusting, but it’s also revealing," Putin said.
